About Steve
I’ve always made things.
Sometimes that has meant brands, campaigns, films, presentations or digital experiences. Sometimes it has meant music, sound, ideas or things I simply wanted to understand well enough to make something from.
Creativity has never really sat in one box for me. It is part of how I work, how I learn and how I spend my time.
Being ever curious
I tend to learn by getting involved. I research, experiment, test things, pull them apart and try to understand why they work.
That curiosity has taken me through healthcare, science, technology, design, storytelling, music and sound. The subjects change, but the instinct is usually the same. Get close enough to understand what is really there, then see what can be made from it.
A maker at heart
I have spent most of my career leading creative work, but I have never completely stepped away from making.
I still design, build, compose and record, and I follow new creative tools closely. Music has been part of my life for a long time and is another serious creative practice for me.
Those different forms of making feed each other. Design has taught me a lot about structure, while music has made me more sensitive to rhythm, tension and emotion. Both influence how I lead creative work and when I choose to shape something or leave it alone.
What experience
has changed
Experience has made me more interested in knowing where creativity has the most value. Sometimes the most useful contribution is the idea itself. Other times it is improving how the team works, helping someone understand something difficult or recognising what is worth protecting before everyone else has seen it.
The making still matters. I just care more now about the thinking that makes the making worthwhile.
